Early Years


Apprenticeships are training programmes for 16-24 year olds who have left education or are already in employment. They offer young people the opportunity to start their career through a combination of learning options and work experience. Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn are essential; you will also undertake an initial assessment and diagnostic testing.

Framework Content:

NVQ - Level 2 Children’s Care, Learning and Development

Course Content:

The following will be included in the programme (6 Mandatory Units):-
Contributing to positive relationships
Helping to keep children safe
Supporting children’s development
Using support systems to develop own practice
Preparing and maintaining environments to meet children’s needs
Supporting children’s play and learning


Optional Units:
Candidates must choose 1 option unit: -
Contribute to the effectiveness of teams
Support the development of babies and children under three
Support a child with disabilities or special needs
Support children and young people’s play


Assessment:

On and off the Job continuous assessment plus a portfolio of evidence to relate to the technical certificate

Technical Certificates
This qualification ensures the learner understands the theory behind the practical side of the subject; there are 3 assignments and one external exam.

Paediatric First Aid

Functional Skills
All apprenticeships now require you to achieve qualifications in Functional Skills (instead of Key Skills). These will be at level 1 or 2 depending on the particular apprenticeship scheme you are taking. Functional skills are in Mathematics, English and ICT and these will build on the skills you have developed previously. With the exception of English speaking and listening which is assessed internally, assessment will be by externally set examinations and opportunities to take these are available at regular intervals throughout your apprenticeship.

Sources of information on chosen industry
Sources of information on employment issues
Codes of practice
Industry Knowledge
Public concern
Possible career paths

Progression

Progression to Advanced Apprenticeship (NVQ Level 3) or a further education programme.

Length of Course

An apprenticeship in Child Care will take 22 months to complete.
