Brickwork


Apprenticeships are nationally designed training programmes for 16-24 year olds who have left education or are already in employment. They offer young people the opportunity to start their career through a combination of learning options and work experience. Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn are looked for although full initial assessment and diagnostic testing is undertaken.

Framework Content:

NVQ - Trowel Occupations Level 2

Course Content:

The following will be included in the programme:

Erect and dismantle working platforms
Storing resources
Contribute to the provision of efficient working practices
Erect masonry structures
Set out for masonry structures
Carry out slinging and signalling for the movement of loads

Optional Unit:
Provide details to masonry structures

Assessment:

Continuous assessment plus a portfolio of evidence to relate to Trowel Occupations.

Technical Certificates - Intermediate Construction Award
The Intermediate Construction Award (ICA), which ensures the learners underpinning knowledge and understanding in the occupational area, is assessed via external examination.

Enhancements - Additional Units
Using Abrasive Wheels - which ensures that the learner can use the equipment safely to sharpen tools they regularly use in their occupation.

Key Skills
Key skills are a range of generic skills, which are fully integrated into the vocational qualification. Assessment of these key skills is via portfolio evidence and external examination. However, exemption can be gained from proxy qualification.

Application of Number Level 1 - This develops the candidate’s ability to interpret straightforward information, carry out calculations accurately, and interpret results and present findings using charts and diagrams.

Communication Level 1 - This develops the candidate’s ability to read and identify main points and ideas from documents and write about straightforward subjects.

Health & Safety Test - Test undertaken at a registered Driving Theory Test Centre

Employment Responsibilities & Rights - It is important that the apprentice is aware of the following issues in the context of his/her own employment:

Employment law and other legislation
Representative bodies
Contract of employment
Sources of information on chosen industry
Sources of information on employment issues
Codes of practice
Industry Knowledge
Public concern
Possible career paths

Progression

Progression to Advanced Apprenticeship (NVQ Level 3) in Trowel Occupations or into further education programme.

Length of Course

An apprenticeship in brickwork will take 22 months to complete.
