Stephenson College has high aspirations for all young people, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and those with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). 

We aim to raise the careers aspirations of our students, to broaden their employment horizons and support them in preparing for the next phase of education or training and beyond.  Young people with SEND and/or have an EHCP have access to impartial advice about all of the education, training and employment opportunities that are on offer, including specialist provision.

As part of Stephenson College's SEND provision we offer programmes for young people who are unsure about which direction to take for the future and those who may need additional support ot achieve their goals. 

Courses are suitable for those who may have a range of mild learning difficulties and/or disabilities. During the course students will focus on personal and social development as well as enhancing their emplyability skills.

Pathways to Independence

This entry level programme has been designed to meet the needs of people with learning difficulties and/or disabilities supported by an Education Health and Care Plan. The range of difficulties may include students with learning difficulties, communication and emotional difficulties, physical difficulties, autism and ADHD.

As well as developing skills in Maths and English you will practice independent living skills during your course and this will include: travelling independently, managing money, catering and communication skills. You will also be given the opportunity to develop your access skills including reading, handwriting and spelling. There will be discrete opportunities for you to work towards personal objectives to achieve your goals. There will also be an opportunity for you to take part in various community based activities as well as volunteering.

Pathways to Employment

This study programme will offer you the opportunity to improve your Maths and English Skills. In addition you will complete units of work designed to get you work ready. Units of work will include independent travel training, personal finance and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. In addition, the second year of this course will include an individually sources work placement which will give you the vital experience of the world of work.

There will be discrete opportunities for you to work towards personal objectives to achieve your goals. There will also be an opportunity for you to take part in various community based activities as well as group work experience. In year 2 of the course, you will take part in an individually sourced work placement.

Supported Internships

Stephenson College was selected to take part in a Department for Education pilot scheme aimed at assisting young people with additional needs into employment. Following its success Stephenson College has included this programme into its curriculum. 

This study programme will offer you the opportunity to work alongside real employees within a work placement that has been individually sourced for you. In addition, you will study units of work designed to give insight into what it takes to be a successful employee. The work placement will be tailored to your needs, and you will be supported all the way by a team of staff at the college including job coaches, and learning support assistants. In addition to your work placement, you will study alongside students from the Pathways to Employment course covering units of work such as: understanding your pay and conditions, the role of unions in the workplace and effective communication in the workplace.
