Frequently Asked Questions

What is life at Stephenson College really like?

Well it's far more than an education; it´s a valuable experience. The College offers students a dynamic and stimulating learning environment. During their time at the College they will meet new people, make new friends and become more independent with the opportunity to learn in a productive and supportive environment alongside people of all ages.

Your daughter or son will be allocated a personal tutor at the start of their programme who will help them settle in and provide general guidance and encouragement through regular tutorial reviews. Your daughter or son will have the opportunity to learn in an ´ultra-modern´ setting and use the most up-to-date equipment available. If you want to come along, meet and discuss college life with college tutors or students you are more than welcome to arrange for a visit, or you can attend one of our Open Days.

Where will my daughter/son go if they have any problems or concerns?

We have a team of friendly and approachable student advisers and counsellors available to speak confidentially to students who will help them with any problems. Students can also speak to their personal tutor.

What if during the first few weeks they find they have chosen the wrong course?

Students are encouraged to complete an ´early days´ survey, which aims to ensure they are on the right course. In addition they can also speak to a student adviser who will liaise on their behalf with the relevant tutor. It is very important to us that students are happy on their course and have made the right decision.

Will someone ensure that my daughter/son is attending college and let me know if they are not?

The course tutor monitors student attendance and will call the students home (if they are under 18), if there are any college related problems.

Will I be kept informed of my daughters/sons progress?

If your daughter or son is under 18 and taking a full-time course you will receive a progress report and will also be invited to attend a parent consultation evening. Should you have any concerns you are welcome to make an appointment at any time.

Does the college help with travel arrangements?

We may be able to help with travel costs if a student is aged between 16 -18 and taking a full-time course.

Does my daughter/son need to be in college when they do not have a lesson?

Students are expected to supplement class time with individual study or group work. Most students study in the Learning Clusters which have a comprehensive range of books, videos, CD ROMS and magazines. The facility also contains computers, quiet study areas and reprographic facilities.

What are Enrichment activities?

Enrichment activities are available throughout the year, covering health and welfare, fitness, safety, environmental issues, community and volunteering work. Sports competitions and events are held and off-site visits/trips are organised. Recreational activities such as pool, darts and Wii games are offered, together with informal games on our outside Multi Usage Games Area. Enrichment is a big part of college life and helps students develop their social skills, much sought after by universities and employers. Should you wish to find out more about what's available this year, please ask at Student Services.

Are there facilities to buy a snack or meal?

We have a modern, well-equipped Bistro and restaurant that offer a selection of value for money meals and snacks. There are also vending machines providing snacks and drinks.

Do students have to pay any fees?

It's free to study at Stephenson College (except for Higher National Certificates and ‘full cost’ commercial courses) as long as your daughter or son is under 19.

Is there any financial support available?

If coming to college means extra cost to you, we may be able to help.

Those most in need will be eligible to receive a bursary of £1,200 a year. They will be aged under 19 on 31 August in the academic year in which they start their full-time course and meet one of the following criteria:
  • In care
  • Care leavers
  • In receipt of Income Support
  • Disabled and in receipt of both Employment Support Allowance and Disability Living Allowance
Other students who need financial support may be able to claim a bursary to help with costs of equipment, books, uniform, food and travel.

What are Apprenticeships?

Apprenticeships are a popular alternative for many school leavers and offer employment based qualifications, which allow young adults to ´earn while they learn´. Trainees not only study NVQ's but also gain accreditation for essential Functional/Key Skills. The college has a dedicated team of advisors for apprenticeships who can provide more information; please call on (01530) 519001.
