Course Description

Institute of Road Transport Engineers Certificate

To show the competence of Personnel in the Maintenance Repair and Inspection of Heavy Vehicles.

To provide industry and the general public with confidence that persons involved in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of road transport vehicles are competent to undertake these duties within the scope of their certification.

Entry Requirements

Existing IRTE certificated persons seeking either re-certification, or supplementary certification to extend the scope of existing IRTE Certification

First time candidates for certification will possess a minimum entry requirement of an S/NVQ at level II (or equivalent) in the same sector that the candidate is seeking assessment or relevant industrial experience. Evidence of qualification(s) and/or authenticated evidence of experience in the sector being assessed.

First Day - Underpinning knowledge & theory exam
Second Day - Practical assessments

How will I learn?

You will have access to fully equipped workshops and resources backed up with a well-equipped learning zone. Learning sessions will include lectures, discussions & group work.

How will I be assessed?

By practical assessment on the above modules and a 50 question theory paper. The theory paper must be passed to earn a full IRTEC licence. The tasks devised will be replicated using a combination of Vehicles, Rigs and Components. Procedures assessed will cover one or more of the following, Fault Diagnosis, Remove, Repair, Replace, using Multimeters, DTI gauges, micrometers, and by general inspection of components and vehicles
The assessment should last approximately seven hours in total.


Example questions and Format Report:
During inspection, the Tachograph was found to have the official seal broken. - PASS or FAIL
The tell tale light of the hazard flasher does not work but the audible warning does. - PASS or FAIL
A seatbelt anchor stalk has three exposed broken wire strands - is this a VOSA Inspection Test pass? - YES or NO
