engineering Area Title

Mechanical Engineering HNC

Course Description

The course is aimed at those wishing to obtain a Higher Engineering Technician qualification. The HNC course consists of a minimum of 5 H units at level H1 and 5 at level H2, whilst the HND consists of a minimum of 16 H units, 8 at level H1 and 8 at level H2 . Once these units have been obtained an EDEXCEL Higher National Certificate/Diploma in Electrical/Electronic Engineering can be awarded.

What will I study

Units to be arranged by the College

Year 1 Core Units Level Value

Business and Management Techniques H 1
Engineering Design H 2
Engineering Science H 1
Analytical Methods for Engineers H 1
Project H 2

Year 2

Mechanical Principles H2 (core unit)

Options

Instrumentation and control principles H1
Engineering Thermo-dynamics H2
Programmable Logic Controllers H1
Fluid Mechanics H1
Quality Assurance & Management H2

The above units are for the HNC. An additional 5 optional units will be presented for the HND. These will be determined during summer of 2007.

How will I learn?

The course uses a student learning approach in which care is taken to relate theoretical principles to practical engineering application.

How will I be assessed?

Each unit is assessed using a variety of assessment methods; e.g. assignments (written/practical) unit phase tests and unit end test. Assessment is College based but is monitored by EDEXCEL External Verifiers.

How Where could it lead?

Many universities accept the HNC qualification as exemption from the first year of a degree course and an HND as exemption from the first 2 years of a degree course.
