Course Description

This course gives the learner an insight into basic Carpentry and Joinery and an understanding of the construction industry. This will range from selecting, ordering and the use of materials, mainly in Woodwork but also to a lesser degree across the industry. Practical sessions will start with very basic Woodwork leading to an end practical test involving the making of a traditional window. Health and safety will be a big part of the qualification and a basic understanding of Maths and English is required. The course consists of seven units. These are split into two parts one part knowledge and one skill. At the end of each unit there will be at test to show your understanding of that unit and there will be a final exam to prove general understanding of the course.

How will I learn?

You will learn through demonstration by your trainer in the practical area. Your knowledge will be gained through classroom delivery by your trainer and assignment work, both in the classroom and on PCs. You will be guided through the course by your trainer following a scheme of work plan. Your practical skills and knowledge will be assessed by your trainer throughout your time in college.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment of your practical skills will be assessed be your trainer throughout the course, with a final assessment of your practical end test. This will be assessed to the standards in college. Knowledge unit understanding will be assessed by a unit end test and a final knowledge exam.

Where could it lead?

Progression onto brick diploma Level 2, on completion of Level 1 and/or possible progression into employment in the construction industry.

Materials/Equipment Required

All kit for your practical work will be supplied by the college. Steel toe cap boots will need to be provided by you in the practical areas. A pencil, pen, ruler, calculator and drawing equipment will need to be supplied by you.
