Entry Requirements

Candidate must have a current Cskills Health and Safety test, (passed within two years).
Construction or related experience.
Driving licence or driving experience.
Able to calculate basic formulas.
Able to record basic details.
Understand basic written details.
Have received site safety induction training.
Possess good eye and hand co-ordination.
Have mechanical appreciation.
Medically able to operate machinery (including eye sight).
If the candidate is less than 21 years of age there are weight / size restrictions in place.
Please note that a lack of any of these attributes does not prevent anyone from being trained for this category.

Course Length

4 days basic training for a novice with limited experience.
If candidate passes the CPCS theory and practical technical test they will have a (red CPCS trained operator card) which lasts for 2 years.

What will I study

Plant training has been de-regulated, however to progress to a full competence card (blue CPCS) the candidates need to complete the following NVQ units in Plant Operations Level 2.
VR 01 Conform to General Workplace Safety.
VR 02 Conform to Efficient Work Practices.
VR 386 Prepare Plant or Machinery for Operational Performance.
VR 394 Operate Plant or Machinery to Compact.

How will I learn?

Through a combination of targeted theory and practical training on a ride-on-roller, the candidate will have an understanding of,
-Roles and responsibilities
-Preparing for work
-Travelling and manoeuvring
-Setting up for work
-Working tasks
-Shutting down procedures

How will I be assessed?

Learning outcomes are assessed and discussed
at the end of every training day and recorded in a training log.
At the end of the course the candidate will undertake a CPCS theory and practical test that has been designed to ensure that, through a combination of training and experience, the training outcomes have been met.
During the test, candidates undertake a series of practical activities, based on core operating skills and are questioned on machine -related subjects.
To be successful candidates need to meet the standard set by CPCS.

Where could it lead?

Candidate could train to operate a compactor.

Materials/Equipment Required

Candidates need to bring their PPE with them.
Hard hat, gloves, goggles, ear protection, reflective vest, protective footwear with steel toe cap and mid sole protection.
The college will provide a classroom and welfare facilities.
Candidates will be given learning material to keep.
Theory equipment required;
PUWER 98 regs.
HSE GS6.
Operator's manual.
Specifications for types of ride-on-rollers.
Practical equipment required;
Ride-on-roller that meets current legislation.
Operators manual.
Sufficient area of ground suitable for compacting, with straight runs and radii and supported / unsupported edges.
Materials to compact.
Tipping vehicle for loading.
Loads and lifting accessories.
