Apprenticeship Animal Care

Course Description

Description
Apprenticeships are training programmes for 16+ who have left education or are already in employment. They offer young people the opportunity to start their career through a combination of learning options and work experience. Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn is essential; you will also want to take an initial assessment and diagnostic testing.

Entry Requirements
A good standard of education. A genuine commitment to work with animals.

Course Length
An Apprenticeship in Animal Care will take 21 months to complete. Day release training takes place at Stephenson Colleges dedicated equine and animal care training centre which is designed to give students hands-on experience and access to relevant resources.

What will I study?
Level 2 Diploma in Work- based Animal Care (City & Guilds)
Functional Skills
Mathematics Level 1
English Level 1
Emergency first Aid (1 day)
Employment rights and responsibilities booklet.

The level 2 Diploma in Work-based Animal Care will include studying the following topics:
Developing personal performance and maintaining relationships
Promoting and maintaining the health and well being of animals.
Establishing and maintaining animals within their accommodation.
Ensuring your own actions reduce risk to health and safety.

In addition to this apprentices select one of the following pathways:
Pet Care and Retail
Dog Grooming
Animal Care and Welfare
Employment Responsibilities and Rights – it is important that the apprentice is aware of the following issues in the context of his/her own employment:
Employment law and other legislation
Representative bodies
Contract of employment
Sources of information on chosen industry
Sources of information on employment issues
Codes of practice
Industry knowledge
Public concern
Possible career paths.

How will I be assessed?
Continuous assessment, observation in an animal care setting and a portfolio of evidence.

Where could it lead?
Progression to Advanced Apprenticeship (Diploma in work- based Animal Care Level 3) or further education programme.
