Description

This is the mandatory professional qualification for teachers in the lifelong learning sector.

Entry Requirements

All applicants are interviewed to discuss individual qualifications and experience. Minimum Level 3 in subject specialism
Literacy and Numeracy at Level 2
Must be employed in a teaching role in the lifelong learning sector


Course Length

Two years – four hours per week

What will I study?

You will develop the knowledge and skills you need to meet the new government standards for teaching in the lifelong learning sector, which will lead to Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status (QTLS).

When you have completed the course, you will be able to:

o Plan, undertake and evaluate teaching and learning
o Promote the development of appropriate values, knowledge, understanding and practice
o Encourage a self-reflective approach to continuing professional development

You will examine theories of teaching, learning and assessment and evaluate these theories by applying them in your own workplace.

Topics include:
Planning, assessment, use of resources, theoretical approaches, the scope of the lifelong learning sector, the specialist teacher, behaviour management, student support, business functions of providers in the sector and an independent research project on a subject of your choosing.

How will I learn?

A variety of teaching methods are used, including formal teaching, guided/individual work and observations.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed on your coursework through written assignments, a professional development journal and a teaching file.

Where could it lead?

You will already be employed in the sector but if you successfully complete the course you could move into a course coordinator role, management or gain other kinds of promotion
