Animal Care


Apprenticeships are training programmes for 16-24 year olds who have left education or are already in employment. They offer young people the opportunity to start their career through a combination of learning options and work experience. Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn are essential; you will also undertake an initial assessment and diagnostic testing.

Framework Content:

NVQ - City & Guilds Level 2 in Animal Care

Course Content:

The following will be included in the programme:

Developing personal performance and maintaining working relationships
Promoting and maintaining the health and well-being of animals
Establishing and maintaining animals within their accommodation
Ensuring your own actions reduce risks to health and safety

Optional Units:
You can choose from fifteen optional units to suit the placement.

Assessment:

Continuous assessment and a portfolio of evidence.

Functional Skills

All apprenticeships now require you to achieve qualifications in Functional Skills (instead of Key Skills). These will be at level 1 or 2 depending on the particular apprenticeship scheme you are taking. Functional skills are in Mathematics, English and ICT and these will build on the skills you have developed previously. With the exception of English speaking and listening which is assessed internally, assessment will be by externally set examinations and opportunities to take these are available at regular intervals throughout your apprenticeship.

Progression

Progression to Advanced Apprenticeship (NVQ Level 3) or further education programme.

Length of Course

An apprenticeship in Animal Care will take 21 months to complete. Day release training takes place at Stephenson College's dedicated equine and animal care training centre which is designed to give students hands-on experience and access to relevant resources.
